The Check_MK Monitoring System
The Check_MK Monitoring System is a comprehensive Open-Source-Solution for IT-Monitoring
developed around the proven Nagios-core. It provides professional monitoring of
applications, operating systems, hardware, networks and processing centres. Statistics can be collected
and recorded over long periods.
The innovative architecture of the Open-Source-Projects
Check_MK and OMD offer numerous advantages in comparison to other Nagios-based solutions:
Through a process unique in the Nagios-World, data systems, network ports, processes, datenbases,
hard drives and other elements to be monitored are automatically and reliably located and included
in the monitoring process.
With this method a considerable saving in time and effort can be achieved. This also ensures that
your monitoring is always comprehensive and up toi date - even when there are daily alterations in the processing centre.
You always have the control over what is monitored.
Rule-based, hierarchial configuration
Check_MK's configuration concept has been developed for large und heterogeneous
environments. Instead of Copy&Paste and page-long
lists of individual values it operates with rules such as "All Data Systems
on Productionsystems that start with /oracle, should be at 95% capacity
be marked as critical.". Hosts are monitored in a hierarchial file structure.
Your advantage: less time and effort and fewer errors in the configuration.
All guidelines are comprehensible at a glance.
High performance through passive checks
With the new-style monitoring-konzept of Check_MK each host only needs to be contacted
once per test-interval. All of the hosts data can be evaluated in one action and
sent as "Passive Checks" to Nagios. This not only reduces overhead on the
computer being monitored, but also that on the monitoring server. In this way,
by using a Check_MK-System with the same Hardware, on average a tenfold number of hosts can be monitored!
You can save hardware, in most cases achieve results with a single server, and have short test-intervals.
These means that in urgent situations you not only receive important alarms sooner,
but also receive values such as for example, network loads, with significantly more precision.
More than 1200 included check-plugins and its own agents
Check_MK cimes with almost 1200 of its own check-plugins that cover all important
areas - from the monitoring of operating systems and applications, of network devices, appliances
and storage-components, and of environment-sensors and exotic devices.
All of these plugins support the automatic Service-Detection,
have appropriate performance-graphs and a consistent documentation.
Via Check_MK's configuration interface the Checks can be directly parametered - without detouring through
a command line. That saves time and nerves.
Check_MK is nevertheless compatible with Nagios and can utilise classical Check-Plugins.
Distributed monitoring with livestatus
Plan a distributed monitoring over multiple locations? Check_MK offers
its own system, based on "Livestatus". With this, multiple monitoring-servers
can be assembled into a virtual combined-system - without continuously sending monitoring data over a network.
This is achieved without a central database and can be easily scaled so that in practice installations of more
than thirty thousand hosts are already in existence.
Instance management with OMD
The Open Monitoring Distribution follows a simple and
ingenious concept for the installation and updating of the complete monitoring-solution.
With a single RPM or DEB-Package a complete environment
is installed on a standard-Linuxdistribution of your selection. No third party software is required.
Best of all: not only can you operate parallel monitoring-entities (e.g. test and production),
these can also be in different versions. When updating to a newer version OMD supports your configuration
with the migration. You save time and don't need to be a Linux expert to be able to install a system.
The Check_MK Micro Core
The Check_MK Monitoring System is currently being completed by an own core: the
Check_MK Micro Core. It's main benefit is a
high performance and extremely short reload times.
Alongside these distinguishing characteristics the Check_MK-Monitoring-System offers
numerous other interesting features:
- Via the web application "WATO" the whole system is completely graphically
configured. No deep Linux knowledge is required and tasks can easily be delegated to colleagues.
- With distributed systems the configuration can be maintained centrally and automatically distributed.
This saves time and reduces errors.
- The integrated Business Intelligence-Module enables the overall status of an application
to be determined via the aggregation of separate values. In this way outsiders can also quickly obtain an
overview of the current situation.
- The Event Console efficiently processes SNMP-Traps and log messages - regardless of whether they
come from data, from the Windows-Eventlog or from Syslog. The outlay for a separate system is saved.
- Check_MK's Status-GUI has an inbuilt display for mobile devices. In the case of alarms during standby hours,
you can not only quickly receive details, but also confirm the problem immediately and avoid
an unnecessary trip to the office.
- Check_MK's own agents are designed for the highest security and fundamentally read
no data from the network. A simple and efficient protection via SSH is possible and protects the
hosts effektively - even from the monitoring system itself.
- Your users can determine for themselves which problems they wish to be notified of and when.
This avoids unwanted emails and increases the acceptance of monitoring.
